DPM Men Sam An: Women Have Significantly Contributed to National Unification and Security

PHNOM PENH: The Minister of National Assembly-Senate Relations and Inspection, Deputy Prime Minister Men Sam An, stated that women have made significant contributions to the cause of national unification, and the defense of national security, which is indispensable and has transformed women’s roles from traditional occupations to more modern, professional ones, through skills training and participation in demining missions abroad under the auspices of the United Nations.

The DPM made these remarks on Tuesday (1 March) morning while presiding over the celebrations for International Women's Day on 8 March (the 111st anniversary of this day under the theme of ‘Gender Equality today for future sustainability’). She also made an announcement of additional amendments to the Branch Committee of the Cambodian Women's Association for Peace and Development, Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports.

DPM Men Sam An also shared a message from Prime Minister Hun Sen and his wife, Bun Rany Hun Sen, the Honorary President of the Cambodian Women's Association for Peace and Development to the whole ceremony with nostalgia and concern for the well-being of people everywhere.

She also announced the appointment of Pen Vimol as the Honorary Chairman of the Branch Committee of the Cambodian Women's Association for Peace and Development, Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, along with a supplementary composition of nine members.

She urged the Branch Committee of the Cambodian Women's Association for Peace and Development to participate in the implementation of the instructions of Prime Minister Hun Sen. The Deputy Honorary President of the Cambodian National Council for Women stated on 21 February 2022 that the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports should implement the following:

A. Continue to investigate the situation of female students at the tertiary level in both public and private educational institutions by making reports to take action. At the same time, it is necessary to organize a dialogue between parents and leaders of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports to research issues that lead to female students dropping out of school and to seek initiatives to improve education services.

B. Continue to focus on promoting digital education, especially the provision of support and increasing the enrollment of female students in digital technology and education in science, technology, engineering, creative arts and mathematics (STEAM).

C. The Ministry of Labor and Vocational Training continues to orient and expand technical and vocational education and training to students in response to the needs of the labor market and expand the provision of scholarships to poor students, especially women and persons with disability, as well as facilitate Internships in the private sector.

She added that in this Covid-19 environment, we must all learn to live and work with the virus, especially to participate in the implementation of the ‘3 Dos and 3 Don’ts’ and particularly be pretected against the Omicron variant.

However, she also continued saying to: Promote the role of women in the fight against Covid-19 and other infectious diseases, encourage women to take the lead in protecting themselves from disease and transmission to their children and family members, and encourage women to bring their children to get vaccinated against various diseases, particularly Covid-19, to contribute to the government’s efforts in preventing the spread of the disease into the community.
